In people with severe mental retardation - an IQ of 20 to 34 - the pre-school development is usually greatly slowed.

Many of these people can be trained to look after themselves under close supervision, and can usually communicate in a simple way. When adults they can undertake simple tasks and may engage in limited social activities.
