Section 57 (Mental Health Act)
This deals with treatments requiring consent and a second opinion, which are:
- pyschosurgery ie. surgical operations destroying brain tissue, and
- hormone implants to reduce male sexual drive
The independent doctor, appointed by the Mental Health Commission, is required to consult two other professionals concerned with the patient's care. One must be a nurse and the other must be neither a nurse nor a doctor.
