the child may not be tired because of too much sleep in the afternoon
the child may not wish to go to sleep because of over- excitement or over-stimulation before bed
the child may not be sleepy because of sleeping late in the morning, thus having a displaced sleep pattern. In this case the child is having sufficient sleep despite going to sleep later than the parents would wish
normal separation anxiety - the child may be frightened of being left alone or abandoned
the child may be anxious because of noises in the dark or because of noises heard from downstairs
the child may be confused of what is expected of him/her. For example the child may be put to bed by his mother but knows that his/her father, who has yet to arrive home, is pleased to see him/her.
