The clinical manifestations of renal bone disease are non-specific. The most common symptom is bone pain which is mainly in the legs, hips, knees, and lower back.

Other features may include:

  • proximal muscle weakness - usually with normal muscle enzyme levels
  • skeletal deformities of the spine and limbs - mainly in patients with osteomalacia
  • tumoral and periarticular calcifications - causing swelling and acute joint pain
  • pruritus - possibly from the high levels of calcium or phosphate in the skin
