  • patient has difficulty speaking in phrases or sentences
  • tachycardia
  • wheezing
  • increased respiratory rate
  • increased incidence of pneumothorax - absent breath sounds
  • patient sitting up
  • use of accessory muscles of respiration
  • drowsiness due to hypercapnia - preterminal
  • patient exhausted and fearful
