Drug-induced vitamin B6 deficiency

Authoring team

Causes include:

  • isoniazid - this competitively inhibits the action of pyridoxine, and routine supplementation is recommended
  • hydralazine
  • penicillamine

Some anticonvulsants, including valproic acid, carbamazepine, and phenytoin, can also increase the catabolism of vitamin B6 and lead to a deficiency. (1)
