Assessment of the consultation

Authoring team

Videotaped consultations are now a feasible method of looking at general practitioners' performance.

Trainees more than trainers were concerned with the importance of humility, flexibility, approachability and treating the patient as an equal.

Trainers more than trainees emphasised the importance of:

  • time management
  • physical examination
  • investigations
  • diagnoses
  • management
  • follow up arrangements

Doctors and patients agree that:

  • good doctors listen to patients and bad ignore them
  • good doctors allow time whilst bad doctors hurry and rush
  • good doctors explain diagnoses, management and drug side effects whereas bad doctors do not
