Extensor digitorum brevis is one of the intrinsic muscles on the dorsum of the foot. It arises from the superior and lateral surface of the calcaneus. It passes anteriorly a short distance before dividing into four tendons. The tendons to the second, third and fourth toes insert into the dorsal base of the middle and distal phalanges. The tendon to the great toe is often regarded as a separate entity - extensor hallucis brevis - see submenu.
Extensor digitorum brevis extends the toes of the fully dorsiflexed foot.
It is innervated by the deep peroneal nerve (L5,S1).
