High risk (annual risk of CVA = 8-12 %)

  • High risk is defined as either
    • previous ischaemic stroke/TIA or thromboembolic event, or,
    • age >=75 with hypertension, diabetes or vascular disease (coronary artery disease or peripheral vascular disease), or,
    • clinical evidence of valve disease, heart failure, or impaired LV function on echocardiography
  • if High risk then
    • anticoagulation with warfarin (INR target 2.5 (range 2.0-3.0) if no contraindications
    • if contraindications to warfarin then aspirin 75mg to 300mg per day if no contraindications
