Oesophagitis treatment
- H.pylori is no more likely to be associated with oesophagitis than in the normal population.
- Inform patients of association with obesity, smoking and heartburn.
- Effective treatments include: - weight loss - propping up the head of the bed - avoidance of bending over, alcohol, fatty foods and other factors which provoke symptoms
- Treatment should provide symptomatic relief. Four weeks is a reasonable starting course.
- Best relief is provided by proton pump inhibitors but many patients obtain adequate control from antacids, raft preparations, H2-antagonists or prokinetic agents
- An attempt should be made to titrate the therapy towards that which provides symptomatic relief at the lowest cost with least influence on normal physiology
- consider NICE guidance on PPIs
