Papules (penis, Bowenoid papulosis)

Features:

  • men - red-brown papules on the shaft of the penis and the glans
  • women - red-brown papules on the labia majora, labia minora and perianal area
  • lesions are less papillomatous, smoother topped, more polymorphic and more coalescent than common genital viral condylomata acuminata
  • lesions show histological features of Bowen's disease
  • Bowenoid papulosis possibly has less malignant potential than other manifestations of intraepithelial neoplasia
    • however it is associated with local human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and systemic disease, particularly HIV
    • HPV16 is found in a significant percentage of cases of Bowenoid papulosis

Treatment:

  • sexual partners should be examined
  • treatment options include cryotherapy, electrocautery, simple shave or scissor excision
