Mode of action
The combined pill prevents pregnancy by:
- suppressing ovulation - mediated by inhibiting GnRH
- altering the cervical mucus making it less penetrable by spermatozoa
- interfering with transport of ova in the fallopian tube
- inducing atrophic change in the endometrium so as not to be conducive to implantation
