Aetiology
- fine crepitations are characteristic of early pneumonia, tuberculosis and bronchiolitis
- medium crepitations are found in pulmonary oedema and alveolitis
- coarse and low pitched are typical of bronchiectasis
- infection may cause any type of crepitation
- crepitations are not significant if they disappear with coughing
