  • fine crepitations are characteristic of early pneumonia, tuberculosis and bronchiolitis
  • medium crepitations are found in pulmonary oedema and alveolitis
  • coarse and low pitched are typical of bronchiectasis
  • infection may cause any type of crepitation
  • crepitations are not significant if they disappear with coughing
