Hypersensitive carotid sinus syndrome
Carotid sinus hypersensitivity (CSH) often manifests as syncope and results from an exaggerated response of hypersensitive baroreceptors within the carotid sinus when stimulated. This causes periods of inappropriately high vagal tone and sympathetic suppression.
The diagnosis is frequently made in:
- men over 50
- patients with atherosclerosis and hypertension
