Indications in chronic retention

Catheterisation is indicated in chronic retention in:

  • acute on chronic retention
  • a patient who is ill, managing a medical emergency - catheterisation may correct an underlying hyperkalaemia and promote a subsequent diuresis
  • the patient who already has a urinary tract infection
