This involves embolectomy and revascularisation of the gut immediately. If this is impossible or unsuccessful then the infarcted gut must be removed surgically.

Secondary prevention includes:

  • anticoagulation
  • control of any condition such as atrial fibrillation
  • aspirin therapy - 75 mg per day
