Cystometry and videocystometry are expensive and time consuming. They are recommended for:

  • stress incontinence:
    • in patients being considered for surgery, to exclude detrusor instability

  • urge incontinence:
    • if medical treatment has been unsuccessful and surgery is contemplated
    • if bladder outflow obstruction is suspected

  • bladder outflow obstruction:
    • in men less than 55 years of age; in older men, it is reasonable to proceed to TURP on the basis of symptoms and flow rate alone
    • to exclude detrusor instability

  • incontinence following prostatectomy:
    • if symptoms persist for several months, medical treatment is unhelpful, and surgery is contemplated
