The muscles of the dermis can be divided into:

  • smooth muscle:
    • blood vessels; important role in thermoregulation
    • express sebum from sebaceous glands
    • dartos muscle; specialised example used in elevation of scrotal contents
    • arrector pili muscles involved in piloerection; attached from undersurface of epidermis to connective tissue sheath of hair follicle
  • striated muscle: few examples e.g. platysma
