Diagnostic criteria
A diagnosis of dermatomyositis requires that five features are present:
- proximal, symmetric muscle weakness
- muscle biopsy evidence of myositis
- elevation of serum muscle enzymes
- characteristic electromyographic abnormalities
- compatible skin involvement
Polymyositis requires only four features, there being no skin involvement.
