Superoxide ion
The superoxide ion is a free radical generated by the addition of an electron to oxygen. It can be caused by:
- oxidases e.g. xanthine oxidase, flavin oxidases
- auto-oxidation in mitochondria
Inactivation may be spontaneous or via the enzyme superoxide dimutase to form the hydrogen peroxide ion.
