In the majority, no cause may be found. Many cases of acute urticaria and/or angio-oedema are allergic in nature and caused by an immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated reaction. The most common agents involved are drugs and foods but these rarely cause chronic urticaria. Chronic inducible urticaria may be triggered by heat, cold, pressure, sunlight, vibration, acetylcholine release, and water. (1)
