General investigations for gangrene
It is important to ascertain the underlying cause of the gangrene:
- urine and blood samples should be obtained and tested for diabetes
- absence of rest pain and intermittent claudication, with palpable dorsalis pedis and posterior tibial pulses imply that there is no associated major arterial disease
- radiology may reveal the presence of any osteomyelitis
- pus should be cultured
