Clinical features of HONK

This diagnosis should be considered in patients with:

  • hyperglycaemia
  • dehydration with marked thirst
  • marked drowsiness

The patient is often old and may be presenting for the first time.

Other features include:

  • convulsions
  • coma
  • focal CNS signs

This condition predisposes to thrombosis.

Hyperventilation is not a feature of HONK.
