Non-ketotic diabetic acidosis
It should be remembered that the acidosis of a diabetic crisis is not always caused by ketones.
Occasionally other anions may be the cause, these include:
- lactic acid
- formic acid in methanol poisoning
- alpha ketoglutarate in liver failure
- phosphate in renal failure
For these reasons the presence of ketones in the blood should be checked for all patients in a diabetic coma.
