Protocol for non-insulin dependent diabetics
Diet controlled diabetics:
- stop oral agents on the morning of the operation
- if fasting blood glucose concentrations are less than 7.0 mM then no special action is normally required
- if the fasting blood glucose is more than 11 mM, or the operation is prolonged, then intravenous glucose and insulin therapy is indicated
