poorly absorbed - generally given parenterally or topically (neomycin may be given orally for its effect on the gastrointestinal tract)
elimination is almost completely renal and so dosages should be reduced where there is renal impairment (use creatinine clearance as guide eg if creatinine clearance is 50ml/min then dose is 50% of usual dose in normal functioning kidneys)
