Cerebello-pontine meningioma

Meningiomas growing in the cerebello-pontine angle may produce a picture similar to that of acoustic neuroma.

Characteristically, there is:

  • loss of hearing in the ipsilateral ear, often accompanied by tinnitus
  • vertigo
  • lower motor neurone seventh nerve palsy
  • altered sensation on the face ipsilaterally
  • absent corneal reflex ipsilaterally
  • ataxia ipsilaterally
  • pyramidal signs - ipsilateral or bilateral - due to brain stem shift and compression of contralateral cerebral peduncles

A progressing cerebellar pontine angle lesion in the absence of hearing defect is more typical of a meningioma than an acoustic neuroma.
