This is a form of electric response audiometry in which a fine electrode is inserted through the tympanic membrane so as to record electrical potentials from the cochlea. A general anaesthetic may be required in a child.
It may be used to assess hearing in children who are unable to co-operate in conventional testing - because of age, disability or disagreeability - and in adults, to diagnose endolymphatic hydrops - for example in Meniere's disease.
