This test is used in the examination of a patient with recurrent vertigo. A finger is abruptly applied to the external meatus. This, in turn, causes a pulse of air-transmitted pressure. If this test induces nystagmus in association with vertigo, then it indicates bony destruction in the inner ear e.g. cholesteatoma.
