Mikulicz syndrome
Mikulicz disease comprises the triad of:
- symmetrical enlargement of all salivary glands
- narrowing of the palpebral fissures due to enlargement of the lacrimal glands
- parchment-like dryness of the mouth
It is due to an autoimmune process and is looked upon as a clinical variant of Sjogren's syndrome.
Mikulicz syndrome has the same clinical picture. However, the salivary and lacrimal glands are enlarged due to known causes such as sarcoidosis and tuberculosis.
These terms are confused and overused. It is better to define the specific lesion rather than use the eponym.
