Conclusions

Authoring team

The conclusions of the trial are:

  • hypertension is a strong risk factor for the development of type II diabetes mellitus

  • only beta-blockers among the commonly used anti-hypertensive medications are associated with an increased risk of developing type II diabetes mellitus

  • when deciding whether to give a beta-blocker the increased risk of developing type II diabetes should be weighed against the proven cardiovascular benefits of beta-blockade

  • concerns about diabetes should not discourage the prescription of thiazide diuretics
