Risk factors

Authoring team

Premature infants, infants exposed to perinatal asphyxia and breast fed babies (by up to a factor of 15) are most at risk of developing haemorrhagic disease of the newborn.

The newborn infant has virtually no hepatic stores of vitamin K and this enzyme is present in only low concentrations in human milk.

Delay in the establishment of lactation during the first week after birth may be a further risk factor.
