The isotope phosphorous-32 takes 6-12 weeks after intravenous injection to reduce the red cell volume in polycythaemia. Patients therefore require monitoring and additional venesection in the first few weeks after injection. One dose of 2.32 millicuries per metre squared has an effect lasting from several months to several years.
Radio-phosphorous is advantagous in non-compliant patients and in those with practical difficulties attending a clinic for regular monitoring.
