With increasing age the following were found with increased frequency in the more elderly patients:

  • comorbid conditions
  • later stage disease at presentation
  • need for emergency surgery
  • non-curative surgical intervention

Overall post-operative morbidity and mortality increased with increasing age however cancer-specific morbidity and mortality showed a less strong correlation.
