Points in history and examination

Should include:

  • Personal History
    • symptoms : chest pain/tightness, SOB, palpitations with exercise
    • history of faint/collapse during exercise, previous heart problems
    • medications (including performance enhancing)/ allergies)
    • previous investigations

  • Family History
    • sudden Cardiac Death/collapse during exercise
    • History helpful but not completely sensitive or specific

  • Physical examination
    • athletes will more commonly show (1):
      • sinus bradycardia
      • displaced apex beat
      • hyperdynamic pulses -3rd and 4th heart sounds
