Auscultation
In auscultation of the abdomen, the following should be listened for:
- bowel sounds
- friction rubs
- venous hum
- bruits. (The stethoscope diaphragm should be placed above the umbilicus to listen for an aortic bruit and then moved 2 cm above and lateral to the umbilicus to listen for a renal bruit. An aortic bruit indicates an abdominal aortic aneurysm and a renal bruit suggests renal artery atherosclerosis.) (1)
