Acute diarrhoea is usually a self-limiting disorder which requires only supportive treatment.

If the diarrhoea lasts more than a week then the following investigations should be performed:

  • stool culture and microscopy
  • sigmoidoscopy and rectal biopsy
  • toxin assays
