Duodenal atresia should be investigated by:

  • electrolyte and acid-base status measures, e.g. U&E's, blood gases, with subsequent correction of abnormalities
  • plain abdominal X-ray: this may show a 'double bubble' sign of duodenal obstruction
  • barium study may show stenosis

Treatment involves surgical correction via a duodenojejunostomy with resection of the atretic section.
