Possible complications include:

  • urinary tract infection - prophylactic antibiotics, often covering the day before and after testing, are therefore advised; for example, trimethoprim 200 mg bd or ciprofloxacin 500 mg od
  • discomfort from catheter insertion with dysuria and frequency after its removal
  • haematuria from urethral trauma
  • acute retention in patients with severe outflow obstruction
