Hepatic encephalopathy (HE)

The incidence and prevalence of HE are related to the severity of the underlying liver insufficiency and portosystemic shunt (PSS).

The prevalence of overt HE at the time of diagnosis of cirrhosis is:

16%-21% in those with decompensated cirrhosis

10%-50% in patients with trans-jugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS)

Minimal HE (MHE) or covert HE (CHE) occurs in 20%-80% of patients with cirrhosis.
