Mesenteric adenitis is an important cause of right iliac fossa pain in children, and as such is important as a differential diagnosis of appendicitis. It is due to non- specific inflammation of the mesenteric lymph nodes which provokes a mild peritoneal reaction and stimulates painful peristalsis in the terminal ileum.
