Morphologically, mixed gallstones are:

  • either hard and facetted - where they have developed in contact - or irregular, "mulberry"-shaped and softer
  • multiple stones, often with several "generations" found together
  • a wide range of colours - near white through yellow and green to black
  • usually radiolucent but 10% are radiopaque
