Other techniques
Newer colorectal surgical techniques are based on attempts to improve the quality of life of patients after surgery. Thus, aims include:
- fewer colostomies
- formation of pouches - ileal or colonic; to reduce incontinence, frequency and constipation
Elderly patients may require palliative care - resectoscope operations or laser treatment for higher tumours.
Rectal ultrasound may be used to more accurately stage tumours and thus may lead to more local excisions, etc.
