Error: 'Rule-out' syndrome
- unfocussed examining and testing to 'rule out' diagnoses, usually due to inadequate or confused history-taking - fear of missing low probability diagnoses leads to excessive tests and referrals
Remedy: limit your 'most likely' list to five diagnoses and 'unlikely but serious/treatable' list to two
