Requirement of anaesthesia include:
- thorough pre-anaesthetic assessment of fitness
- patient consent
- hypnosis or unconsciousness - a sleep-like state in which there is unawareness of surroundings and suppression of reflexes
- analgesia
- muscle relaxation - depending on the type of surgery
- easy reversibility of the induced state
- maintenance of as near to normal physiology as possible
