Therapeutic uses
The mineralocorticoids are used for:
- replacement therapy:
- adrenocortical insufficiency
- pituitary insufficiency
- treating symptomatic postural hypotension: a second-line measure only after careful exclusion of common pathologies. Care should be taken to avoid fluid overload.
Aldosterone does not tend to be used clinically due to its short half life and the requisite of intramuscular injection. Fludrocortisone, which can be given orally, is most commonly used.
