Cytology
The monocyte has a characteristic kidney-shaped, indented nucleus with grey-blue cytoplasm after Romanowsky staining. It is strictly classified as agranular, but it often contains numerous lysosomes which appear as dense granules on electron microscopy. Centrioles and Golgi apparatus are also common findings.
