Other causes of acute flaccid paralysis:

  • due to other infections
    • enteroviruses - includes coxsackievirus A7 and enterovirus 71
    • tickborne encephalitis
    • flaviviruses - includes Japanese encephalitis and, more recently, West Nile virus
    • diphtheria
    • botulism

  • Guillain-Barre syndrome

  • acute inflammatory polyneuropathy

  • acute transverse myelitis

  • acute spinal cord compression

  • myasthenia gravis

  • spinal cord trauma and infarction

  • lead and other heavy metal poisoning (1)
