Contraindications

Authoring team

The BNF, Data Sheet Compendium and the Inter-Lex computer database give information on contraindications.

Any known patient allergies need to be marked on the outside of the patients' notes and computers have to be informed of allergies before they can help prevent error. (An expanding area of decision support by computers is the checking for contraindications such as allergy, interaction and previous discontinuations of medication.)

Doctors must have a working knowledge of the appendices in the BNF covering interactions and prescribing in special circumstances as liver or kidney failure, pregnancy and breastfeeding. The electronic version eBNF can be searched rapidly and is continuing to evolve into a user-friendly tool for use during the consultation.
