The Barthel Index score for walking is assessed on the following scale:
- 3 may use an aid - not a wheelchair - with speed unimportant, but must be able to manage around own house or flat, or the ward
- 2 needs supervision, either verbal or physical, including help standing up or onto a Zimmer frame or another frame, or the distance managed is inadequate
- 1 independent in a wheelchair and able to negotiate corners unaided
- 0 immobile
